Dudh Kunda Camping Trek
Trip Overview
The Dudh Kunda Camping Trek is a rare opportunity to explore one of the most untouched corners of the greater Everest region, far from the busy trails of the Khumbu. Bordering the Everest region to the north, this remote trek leads through the traditional Sherpa homeland of the Solu district, offering genuine cultural immersion with far fewer trekkers on the trail. The journey centers on Dudh Kunda, a sacred alpine lake resting at the foot of Mount Numbur and Mount Karyelung, revered by both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims and the site of a major festival held every July or August on the full moon.
This 17-day package takes you from Zurich to Kathmandu, where you'll stay in a quality 4-star hotel, followed by a short flight to the mountain airstrip at Phaplu, where the trek begins. From here, the route winds through dense pine and rhododendron forest, high ridgelines, and traditional Sherpa villages, passing ancient monasteries and prayer walls along the way, with regular views of Mount Everest, Thamserku, Mera Peak, and Kanchenjunga opening up from the higher viewpoints. The trail leads through Ratnange Danda, Chyangmiteng, Kemje, Taksindu, and Lhuksindo before reaching Saharsa Beni, the base for a rewarding day hike up to the holy waters of Dudh Kunda Lake at 4,650 m, encircled by high Himalayan peaks and grazed by local yak herds.
The return route offers a rewarding variation, descending through Yak Kharka to the prosperous village of Junbesi, home to a school built by Sir Edmund Hillary, before climbing to Pikey Peak Base Camp and summiting Pikey Peak for one of the finest panoramic sunrise views in the entire region. The trek concludes back in Phaplu, followed by a scenic flight back to Kathmandu.
Combining sacred pilgrimage sites, authentic Sherpa hospitality, and genuinely off-the-beaten-path Himalayan scenery, this camping-based adventure is ideal for experienced trekkers seeking a quieter, more traditional alternative to the classic Everest and Annapurna routes.
Trip Facts
Itinerary
Your Dudh Kunda adventure begins as you check in for your international flight from Zurich, bound for Kathmandu, the vibrant capital of Nepal. Depending on your routing, the journey may include a layover, giving you time to relax before the trip ahead. As you approach Kathmandu, look out for your first glimpses of the terraced hills and forested ridges of the Himalayan foothills that hint at the remote mountain country you'll soon be exploring.
Arrive in Kathmandu (1,340 m/4,396 ft) and transfer to your 4-star hotel, conveniently located close to a range of shopping centers and restaurants, ideal for picking up any last-minute trekking essentials. With the rest of the day at leisure, take time to rest after your flight, meet your trekking guide, and review the days ahead. This is also a good opportunity to explore a little of Kathmandu's lively streets before setting off toward the remote Solu region tomorrow.
Transfer to the airport early for a short domestic flight to Phaplu (2,460 m/8,071 ft), a small mountain airstrip that serves as the gateway to the Solu region. On arrival, meet the rest of your trekking and camping crew and enjoy an early lunch before setting off along a gently ascending trail toward Garikhasa village, passing through beautiful pine forest. The trail continues on to Ratnange Danda (3,200 m/10,499 ft), a walk of around 3 to 4 hours, where your camping crew will have your first campsite ready for the night.
After breakfast, hike up to the Ratnange Danda viewpoint for a truly panoramic mountain vista, taking in Mount Everest, Thamserku, Mera Peak, and Kanchenjunga on a clear day. From here, walk down along the ridge through beautiful rhododendron and pine forest, enjoying continuing mountain views, to reach Chyangmiteng Village (2,600 m/8,530 ft), a walk of around 3 hours. Chyangmiteng is a beautiful, traditional Sherpa village located in the peaceful Solukhumbu region of Nepal. It represents the true heart of Sherpa culture, far away from the busy commercial trekking trails. It is my birth place and would like to show and experience our unique culture and traditions to you.
Set off again after breakfast, hiking up to the Khasaparma Danda viewpoint for another sweeping panorama of Mount Everest, Thamserku, Mera Peak, and Kanchenjunga. From there, continue along the ridge through further stretches of rhododendron and pine forest, enjoying fine mountain views throughout, until you reach Kemje Danda (3,550 m/11,647 ft), a walk of around 3 to 4 hours. This scenic viewpoint offers views of both the high peaks and the traditional Sherpa villages scattered across the Solu region below.
Continue trekking along the ridge, with some gentle descent, enjoying views of the mountains of the Khumbu valley alongside the striking peaks of Numbur and Karyelung, which will remain a focal point of the trek in the days ahead. It is a relatively easy walking day, following a trail through dense forest before reaching Taksindu pass and descending to the historic Taksindu Monastery (2,950 m/9,678 ft), a walk of around 4 to 5 hours.
Climb back up to Taksindu pass and continue along a quieter, less-traveled path used mainly by pilgrims and local yak herders during the summer months. This off-the-beaten-path trail offers a genuine sense of remoteness as it leads to Lhuksindo (3,425 m/11,237 ft), a walk of around 3 to 4 hours, where your camping crew will set up camp for the night amid peaceful mountain surroundings.
Today's trek involves climbing steep sections through dense mixed forest of pine, rhododendron, and bamboo, reaching the beautiful viewpoint of Kamo Danda along the way. The trail then becomes somewhat easier, following a series of level paths that wind around the contours of the mountainside, before arriving at Saharsa Beni (4,150 m/13,615 ft), a demanding walk of around 5 to 6 hours that marks your arrival into truly high-altitude terrain.
The highlight of the trek: set off this morning on a day hike up to the sacred Dudh Kunda Lake (4,650 m/15,256 ft), resting at the base of Mount Numbur and Mount Karyelung, a walk of around 5 to 6 hours round trip. Each year in July or August, on the full moon day, a major festival draws thousands of Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims to this holy site, and even outside festival season the lake's setting amid high Himalayan peaks is genuinely awe-inspiring. After spending time at the lake, trek back down to your campsite at Saharsa Beni for a second night.
Cross a small bridge over the Dudh Koshi River and climb back up into the valley below Pore Hill, walking through beautiful high-altitude meadows and kharkas (yak pastures) that are typical of this remote part of the Solu region. Reach Yak Kharka (3,600 m/11,811 ft) after a trekking day of around 5 to 6 hours, with excellent opportunities to spot yaks grazing along the trail.
Today's trail descends mostly downhill toward Junbesi (2,675 m/8,776 ft), one of the more prosperous villages in the Solu district, a walk of around 4 to 5 hours. Junbesi is home to a school funded and built by Sir Edmund Hillary, several shops and lodges, and one of the region's better-known monasteries, renowned for producing the wood blocks used to print prayer flags and religious texts. Take some time in the afternoon to visit the Gompa and explore this welcoming Sherpa village.
Continue trekking through beautiful Sherpa villages, forest, and old yak pastures on the way to Pikey Peak Base Camp (3,640 m/11,942 ft), a scenic walk that sets you up for the final highlight of the trek: an early-morning summit hike the following day.
Rise early for a rewarding sunrise hike to the summit of Pikey Peak (4,065 m/13,337 ft), long regarded as one of the finest viewpoints in the region for panoramic Himalayan views, including Mount Everest and a wide arc of surrounding peaks. After taking in the views, descend to Phaplu (2,460 m/8,071 ft), walking through forest and Sherpa villages along the Solu River valley, with a final climb of a few hours before reaching your destination for the night.
Enjoy a well-earned rest day in Phaplu after the demanding trekking days behind you. Those who wish to stretch their legs can take a gentle walk through nearby Sherpa villages along the Solu River valley, while others may prefer to simply relax, recover, and reflect on the journey so far before flying back to Kathmandu tomorrow.
Take a short and scenic 35-minute flight from Phaplu back to Kathmandu (1,340 m/4,396 ft), offering a final aerial glimpse of the Solu-Khumbu foothills you've spent the past two weeks trekking through. On arrival, you'll be transferred to your 4-star hotel, with a free afternoon to relax, do some last-minute shopping, or explore more of the city at your own pace.
With your Dudh Kunda adventure complete, transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward flight home, carrying with you memories of sacred lakes, remote Sherpa villages, and some of the quietest, most authentic mountain trails in Nepal.
Arrive back in Zurich, bringing your Dudh Kunda Camping Trek to a close.
