Gokyo Everest Base Camp Trek
Trip Overview
The Gokyo Everest Base Camp Trek is one of the most complete and rewarding journeys through the Khumbu region, combining the turquoise glacial lakes of the Gokyo Valley with the iconic trail to Everest Base Camp, linked by a crossing of the dramatic Cho La Pass. This 20-day package takes you from Zurich deep into Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on a route that reveals a far broader picture of the Everest region than the classic Base Camp trail alone.
After flying from Zurich to Kathmandu, you'll take a short mountain flight to Lukla (with an alternative overland option via Manthali/Ramechhap) to begin trekking through Sherpa country. The trail follows the Dudh Koshi River to Phakding before climbing to Namche Bazaar, with a dedicated acclimatization day and side hike to the Everest View Hotel. From Namche, the route branches toward Gokyo, climbing through Dole and Machherma to reach the string of sacred glacial lakes at Gokyo village, with a further ascent to the summit of Gokyo Ri, offering one of the most spectacular panoramas in the Himalayas, including four of the world's six highest peaks.
From Gokyo, the trek crosses the demanding Cho La Pass at 5,368 m via Thangna, rejoining the classic Everest Base Camp route at Dzongla and continuing through Lobuche to the true highlight of the journey: Everest Base Camp itself, followed the next morning by a pre-dawn climb to Kala Patthar, the highest point of the entire trip and widely regarded as the finest viewpoint of Mount Everest in the region. From here, the return journey descends through Dingboche, Namche Bazaar, and back to Lukla.
After flying back to Kathmandu, a final day allows for sightseeing and relaxation before your international departure back to Zurich. Combining alpine lakes, a genuine high-mountain pass crossing, and the emotional milestone of Base Camp, this trek is ideal for well-prepared trekkers seeking a richer, more varied alternative to the standard Everest Base Camp route.
Trip Facts
Itinerary
Your Gokyo Everest Base Camp adventure begins as you check in for your international flight from Zurich, bound for Kathmandu, the vibrant capital of Nepal. Depending on your routing, the journey may include a layover, giving you time to relax before the trek ahead. As you approach Kathmandu, look out for your first glimpses of the terraced hills and forested foothills that mark the edge of the Himalayas.
Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu (1,400 m/4,593 ft) and transfer to your 4-star hotel. With the rest of the day free, take time to rest after your flight, meet your trekking guide, review the days ahead, and do any last-minute shopping for trekking gear in the Thamel district. Given the demands of this route, this is also a good opportunity to double-check your equipment and ask any final questions before setting off toward the Khumbu.
Take an early and scenic 35-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (2,840 m/9,318 ft), one of the most famous mountain airstrips in the world, or, depending on seasonal flight scheduling, drive by shared tourist vehicle to Manthali/Ramechhap (474 m/1,555 ft), a journey of 5 to 6 hours, followed by a shorter 20-minute flight to Lukla. On arrival, meet your trekking crew and set off on the trail, descending gently through pine forest and past mani walls and prayer flags to reach Phakding (2,610 m/8,562 ft), a walk of around 3 to 4 hours alongside the Dudh Koshi River.
Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m/11,286 ft), a 5 to 6-hour walk that includes crossing several suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River, including the dramatic Hillary Suspension Bridge, before a steep, switchbacking climb up to Namche. Along the way, you'll pass through Sagarmatha National Park's entry checkpoint at Monjo, and, on a clear day, catch your first distant glimpse of Mount Everest. Namche Bazaar itself is the bustling trading hub of the Khumbu, with shops, bakeries, and a lively Saturday market.
Spend a crucial acclimatization day at Namche (3,440 m/11,286 ft), with a hike up to the Hotel Everest View (3,880 m/12,730 ft) and back. This higher-altitude excursion offers extraordinary panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku, and follows the trekking principle of climbing high and sleeping low to aid acclimatization. Many trekkers also use part of the day to explore Namche's shops, cafes, and the excellent Sherpa Culture Museum.
Leaving the main Everest Base Camp trail behind, trek from Namche to Dole (3,680 m/12,073 ft), a 4 to 5-hour walk that branches off toward the quieter Gokyo Valley. The trail climbs steadily through rhododendron and juniper forest along a scenic ridge, with fine views back over Namche and the surrounding peaks, offering a noticeably more peaceful alternative to the busier main EBC route.
Trek from Dole to Machherma (4,470 m/14,665 ft), a 5 to 6-hour walk that continues climbing through increasingly open, high-altitude terrain, with the vegetation thinning as the trail follows the Dudh Koshi valley toward the head of the Gokyo Valley. Keep an eye out for herds of yak grazing on the hillsides, and, on clear days, growing views of the surrounding snow peaks.
Trek from Machherma to Gokyo (4,800 m/15,748 ft), a 5 to 6-hour walk that passes the first and second of the sacred Gokyo Lakes before arriving at the picturesque lakeside village of Gokyo itself, set on the shore of the third lake and overlooked by the Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal's largest. The turquoise waters against a backdrop of high peaks make this one of the most scenic overnight stops of the entire trek.
Climb to the summit of Gokyo Ri (5,483 m/17,988 ft) and back to Gokyo, a demanding but immensely rewarding 5 to 6-hour round trip. From the top, you'll enjoy one of the most spectacular panoramas in the Himalayas, with unobstructed views of four of the world's six highest peaks: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, alongside the turquoise Gokyo Lakes and the vast Ngozumpa Glacier below. The remainder of the day is free to relax by the lakeside village.
Trek from Gokyo to Thangna (4,500 m/14,764 ft), a shorter 4 to 5-hour walk that crosses the edge of the Ngozumpa Glacier before climbing to the small settlement of Thangna, the last stop before the crossing of Cho La Pass. This is a deliberately shorter day, allowing your body time to rest and prepare for the demanding pass crossing ahead.
The major test of this trek: trek from Thangna to Dzongla (4,710 m/15,453 ft) via the crossing of Cho La Pass (5,368 m/17,612 ft), a demanding 7 to 8-hour trekking day. The ascent to the pass involves scrambling over rocky terrain, while the descent crosses a section of glacier that typically requires crampons or microspikes due to ice underfoot. Beyond the pass, the trail rejoins the classic Everest Base Camp route, descending to Dzongla with fine views back toward the peaks of the Gokyo Valley.
Trek from Dzongla to Lobuche (4,910 m/16,109 ft), a shorter and more relaxed 4 to 5-hour walk that allows time to recover after the demanding pass crossing. The trail traverses open, high-altitude terrain alongside the terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier, with dramatic views of Nuptse and the surrounding icy peaks, positioning you for the final push toward Everest Base Camp.
The most iconic day of the trek: trek from Lobuche to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m/17,598 ft) and then back to Gorak Shep (5,164 m/16,942 ft), a 7 to 8-hour trekking day. The trail follows the edge of the Khumbu Glacier over rocky, uneven terrain before arriving at the famous Base Camp itself, marked by prayer flags and, in climbing season, colorful expedition tents at the foot of the treacherous Khumbu Icefall. After taking in the emotional highlight of the trip, retrace your steps to Gorak Shep for the night.
Rise well before dawn for the demanding but unforgettable hike up to Kala Patthar (5,555 m/18,225 ft), the highest point of the entire trek and widely considered the finest viewpoint of Mount Everest anywhere in the region, with sunrise light gradually illuminating Everest, Nuptse, and the surrounding summits. After soaking in the views, descend all the way to Dingboche (4,410 m/14,469 ft), a long trekking day of around 7 to 8 hours that brings a welcome return to thicker, more oxygen-rich air.
Trek from Dingboche back to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m/11,286 ft), a 6 to 7-hour walk retracing the trail down through Tengboche and Phunki Tenga, with the forest and greenery gradually returning as you descend, and a final chance to enjoy the comforts of Namche's bakeries and lodges.
Trek from Namche Bazaar back to Lukla (2,840 m/9,318 ft), a 6 to 7-hour walk retracing the trail down through Phakding and along the Dudh Koshi River, marking the final trekking day of this remarkable journey through the Gokyo Valley and to Everest Base Camp.
Take your return flight from Lukla to Kathmandu, a scenic 35-minute journey, or fly from Lukla to Manthali/Ramechhap (474 m/1,555 ft), a 20-minute flight, followed by a same-day drive to Kathmandu by shared tourist vehicle, taking around 5 to 6 hours. Arrive back in the city and check in to your 4-star hotel, with a well-earned hot shower and comfortable bed waiting after over two weeks of demanding high-altitude trekking.
Spend your final full day in Nepal exploring Kathmandu's rich cultural heritage, with its ancient temples, historic squares, and bustling streets offering a fitting close to your Himalayan journey. Depending on your interests, this can include visits to notable landmarks such as Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, or Pashupatinath, or simply wandering the narrow lanes of Thamel. Use the day at your own pace to relax, shop for souvenirs, or simply enjoy the atmosphere of the city before departure.
Transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport in good time for your international flight home, ready to begin your journey back with unforgettable memories of the Gokyo Lakes, Cho La Pass, Everest Base Camp, and Kala Patthar.
Arrive back in Zurich, bringing your Gokyo Everest Base Camp Trek adventure to a close, with the memory of turquoise glacial lakes, a demanding high pass, and standing at the foot of the world's highest mountain staying with you long after the journey ends.
